New (holistic) dentist wants to charge me a $150 "ozone" fee for a single filling replacement

Main Post:

This week I went to see a new dentist, after losing confidence in my prior dentist due to their policy of fear-mongering about mercury, as well as some other questionable practices.

I decided to try this new dentist based on overwhelmingly positive Yelp reviews. Once in the office I noticed a couple of books in the waiting area with titles including words like TOXICITY. This was concerning to me but I also started to doubt what I thought I already knew, which was that amalgam is safe.

After the exam they set me up an appt to have one of my last remaining amalgam fillings removed and replaced due to a cavity. (Previous dentist had replaced several with composite.) They went over a schedule of fees for this procedure and it included a $150 fee for "ozone extraction" or something along those lines. A rubber dam was mentioned but the explanation was not very clear or informative.

Based on what I've read both in this sub and elsewhere, the above seems to be a load of BS. I started looking at the dentist's website and it turns out that she's openly anti-amalgam (I should have done my homework.) Here's a page from her website:

http://www.drnicolevane.com/san-diego-mercury-filling-removal.html

So here's my question: Is there even a shred of truth in the above URL? Most of what she's saying seems to be contradicted by, for example:

Follow up question: If, as I suspect, this is just a bunch of anti-vaxxer/anti-flouride type BS, how are dentists like this not shut down for malpractice?

Run. Just fucking run away from that shit, both your old and new dentist.

Holistic Dentistry?

Main Post:

I was looking around for a new dentist, and one of them listed "Holistic Dentistry" as one of their specialties. Does anyone know anything about that? Should that be a concern to a woo-shunning skeptic such as myself? Are they going to tell me to do some sort of voodoo cleanse on my colon to purge "toxins" in order to help my gums stay healthy?

"holistic dentist"... what??

Main Post:

I recently went to a so-called holistic dentist and they never even asked what my diet was (if I was eating minerals, fat soluble vitamins to make those minerals work). Hello, that affects the health of the teeth. Are there any real holistic dentists in this group? Can you help heal mouth issues rather than just do surgery and procedures? (Gum massage, diet overhaul, microbiome work, etc).

Top Comment: "I came here expecting to be fed bullshit and all this dentist wants to do is evidenced based clinical treatment. If I wanted practical solutions to my health problems, why would I have come to a quack in the first place?" Holistic dentistry is complete horseshit. It's just marketing to help unscrupulous dentists target stupid people and fleece them for their money. You know, like homeopathy, Nigerian prince scams, or investing in Beanie Babies.

What do you think about 'Holistic Dentistry" ?

Main Post:

As an experienced Registered Dental Assistant and Patient Care Coordinator, i have been seeing patients transferred to our office from Holistic Dentists. Unfortunately, most of them ended up with big treatment plans after we evaluate them. Mostly end up with EXT, RCT, Crowns. I had no idea what holistic dentist before.

As i learnt, they mostly don't accept insurance. Their website similar with yoga studio websites, no FL, they prefer 'watching' instead of recommending fillings to preventing cavities to get bigger. However, i saw many x-rays that holistic dentist 'watches' however, cavity is in dentin and even very close to nerve. But holistic dentist doesn't perform any treatment. Still keeps watching..

I am very curious what holistic dentist is? Not trying to be disrespectful. However, after i saw patients end up with extensive treatment plans after seeing by holistic dentist for years and this made me worry.

I am curious what ya'll thinking.

Has anyone here gone to a holistic dentist?

Main Post:

I’m interested in the cone beam CT scan. I have a crown that’s either chipped or cracked. The dentist I just went to said it’s fine for now. A previous one just told me to be careful. I expressed that occasionally the gum gets irritated but the mouthwash I use helps. I try not to read too much into other experiences but some stories I’ve heard are really sticking with me. Like root canals being infected, those bacterias even causing cancer. Besides just being worried about my oral health I’m wondering if there’s possibly An infection and contributing to other issues, like my mental health, issues with overeating and subsequently not being able to lose any weight. I’ve had blood tests, a recent stool test and am in therapy, and all those tests were normal. I just do not feel right (of course I am 2.5 years pp, I thought by now I’d feel somewhat normal).

I’d just like to know if others found things with this ct scan that helped. Whether it’s an infection or an airway issue (the place I’m looking at said they look for this). I could be grasping at straws just trying to feel like I’m pinpointing a reason for all my issues. But hearing other stories might be helpful, especially when talking about using our HSA to pay for it.

Holistic Dentistry

Main Post:

Has anyone seen the movie “Tooth” if so does anyone know of a dentist that prescribes to these theories? The theory being that during the root canal most times there is left behind dying tissue that is trapped beneath the cement used to fill the hole and create the post the the fake tooth is then cemented to. This dying and eventually dead trapped tissue turns into different poisons. Botulism being one of them. This in turn interrupts the lines of energy flowing through our bodies ( see acupuncture) The remedy for this is to remove the roots entirely and inject ozone at each location to neutralize the poisins. If anyone knows of a dentist in or near Bellingham that buys into this please reply with that dentist’s name. Thanks

Typically dentists here like to follow science, that’s been my experience so far.

Holistic dental options for toddler

Main Post:

Hey everyone😊 Wondering if there are any holistic dentists on here or anyone that has gone through this experience. My son's dentist wants to put resin composite crowns in his mouth, he is 2 years old. My child has endocrine issues where his endocrinologist is trying to link it to his autism. I did research and resin composite can Leech BPAs which are endocrine disruptors.. though I know it's a subtle amount but In his case I'm choosing to be extra cautious. His regular dentist also said she won't do porcelain crowns anymore because they kept breaking in her pediatric clients. I wouldn't want to do porcelain anyway because they fuse it to a metal layer and I wouldn't want heavy metals to get in his body from it.

Someone had told me that they avoided crowns in their toddler by focusing on gut health and remineralizing the teeth until the baby teeth fell out and the adult teeth were beautiful when they came in with no problems... She chose to avoid fluoride toothpaste for her kids.

She also recommended a holistic dentist but I doubt one would accept my child's Medicaid dental plan..

Can I ask for anyone else's experiences and what they would recommend I can do?

Your kid already has cavities and anything you do to avoid addressing that with things that work is just going to harm them further, and more tangibly than non-existent risks from dental materials. Fix your child's disease now, before it gets worse, and focus on a low sugar exposure diet.
